Habitat for Humanity Hungary was founded in 1996. Since then we have helped more than 2000 families. 149 families could move into a new home, 550 families have been served with repair and renovation projects and 1300 families have participated in trainings.
We started our work with the traditional Habitat model, that is, building new homes with the participation of volunteers as well as the families. The houses were sold to the families at no profit and with affordable loans. However, we had come to realize that with this program we could serve only a small number of families a year, and that many families face challenges maintaining their existing homes, and are in need of an affordable repair or renovation. In 2009 we closed the new construction program and launched new ones to address the local need, and serve more families.
Habitat for Humanity Hungary’s construction projects focus on low-cost interventions to create a more sustainable and more energy efficient home for families. Likewise, we have developed financial and home maintenance trainings to enable families to improve their living standards by themselves.
1.2 million people are affected by poverty housing in Hungary. To address the need a more socially sensible housing policy is required. For this reason we started an advocacy work beside the construction projects and educational programs that we run.
